ByKay Mei Tai - Review!

ByKay is a lovely mum of four, Kay Poelen, who is sending some very cool carriers out into the world. Her denim range is the bomb for mums who want to keep it simple and dads who want their carrier to blend in. She sent me a sample of her wares (oh yes, this means a giveaway for you lovely folk!) and I'm really impressed.

Personally I feel the only acceptable time to wear "double denim" is when your carrier is the second piece. The stonewash blue is clean and simple, the dark denim really sleek and sharp. They're fully reversible and look good either way. OH, and they're actually 48% linen, 52% cotton, so VERY supportive and summer-friendly.

Being a wrapper, I'm a fan of the wrap straps. I don't like drowning in padding or bulk and I really appreciated being able to  spread the straps easily and achieve fantastic support. The denim is substantial enough to wrap very smoothly and moulds very well. I liked the lightly padded waist - 12 cms wide, it didn't bunch or dig and I think the shorter waist sash (2m end to end) is a clean option for people who don't like excess dangling. The body of the carrier is quite tall (40 cms), and I can see that carrying a child (like a 3-4yo) is absolutely a practical option, especially using the wrap straps to widen the seat.

Conversely, the clever design of the seat (oh hai buttons!) makes this an ideal carrier for small babies- not only can you roll or apron the carrier to shorten the body, but you can tailor the width of the seat by buttoning back the leg padding (28 cms to 45cms) - smart.

The seat darts run nice and deep to help you get that good M-position seat every time.

The fuss-free sleep hood sits smoothly over the body of the carrier and can be anchored with loops situated behind the shoulder straps- more nice, minimalist design. I love this carrier because I can see it getting everyone wearing. It is as easy to care for as your jeans, it blends in and doesn't take great skill to wear comfortably, it has a long span of usefulness with your child (rated to 18kgs)... Win.

As you can see from the dark denim pics, we took this baby on a lengthy hike (about 90 minutes) and not a thing shifted. Completely comfortable with 11kilos of toddler and bread for the ducks... In a FRONT carry. I'm sold. And  I'm really interested in trying out a ByKay denim WRAP, too!
Oh, nearly forgot -  you can win one- right here:  YES! I want to enter this worldwide giveaway!

Just because we like the personal touch and spreading a bit of good karma, your light blue denim carrier is coming to you from Mornington Peninsula Babywearers - my local group of awesome people who like to wear their babies ;) This giveaway is open WORLDWIDE, so share some love and make sure you're in!

  4. My favorite carrier is probably my wcmt, but I very much miss my woven wrap.

  5. I'm trying to get a collection before bubs arrives. So far I have a ring sling, an ergo and a woven wrap. The only one I've actually used was the woven wrap (roses), with DD for about half an hour. She's very light, but at almost 8yrs old she's a bit too lanky to wrap comfortably, as she's only about a foot shorter than me!

  6. the whole family loves the wovens :) cant complain about a good SSC either ;)

  9. So far I have not been able to afford a good carrier but working soon on trying a few. I definitely want a woven, kinderpack, and mei tai.

  10. Mei tai has been my fave so far. Not much luck with my ring sling and too afraid to try a real wrap!

  11. I have tried a sleepy wrap, ergo, mei tai, and a woven wrap. So far my favorite is my woven wrap (for my 3mo) I love the Mei Tai for my two year old.

  18. I've only used a hybrid stretchy wrap so far, and loved it for my little, but now he's not so little i'd love to try something new that would support him well like a Mei Tai or a really gorgeous Woven :)

    ReplyDelete
  19. I've tried a stretchy wrap, and I have a smith firm wrap, but I'd love a mei tai, and I'm hoping to get a nice new carrier before the new squish comes in October

  20. Up until now, I love my woven wraps.
Never had a mei tai before, so I'm very curious what it's like!
I've heard, and read good things about it.
Really do love the look of the entire bykay denim collection.
Looks great on you, wonder what it'll look like on me, lol!

  21. I love my ring sling but my little snug a bug is getting big for it to be comfortable for long periods.

  22. woven wraps, (but thats all I've tried.

  23. With my eldest, it was a stretchy and then a ring sling as she got older. With our little bundle, we've tried them all! I love the support of a woven, the flexibility and softness of a stretchy and the convenience of a ring sling. I'm looking forward to trying a mei tai when she's a little older.
It's hard to choose a favourite, but as we mostly carry her on the school run, I'd say a ring sling as it's so quick and easy to use. I just came across a ByKay denim ring sling here in the UK but they were sold out - I'd love to try one of these instead.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I've only ever tried a DIY Moby and an Ergo. I love both for different reasons. I'd like to try a woven or a carrier without buckles though.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I love my woven wrap but my go to for my lo is my wcmt made especially for my little man, but with another one on the way, it is always good to add another.

  28. So far my favourite type of carrier has been the standard woven wrap, specifically in a linen blend and size 7. However, I'm super excited to hear about this denim carrier being a linen blend! If we don't win this give-away, we'll probably buy one :-D

    2. I LOVE the adjustable features of this mei tai! I tandem wear my twins and appreciate a wide variety of options, but my boys, who are only 50th% for height, outgrew our mei tai by the time they were ten months old. They still nap when I wear them and the lack of head support on that mei tai caused us to retire it. This mei tai would solve that problem! A hood and adjustable seat! I think I'm in love!

  29. Hey,
I`ve never tried a MT but I`d love to :)
Now we´re using a Slling and the Emaibaby, which is tooo small for my husband (ust like the bondolino) so a MT could be the solution...

  64. In all honesty I cannot give a best carrier favorite carrier as my bubs hated her ergo so I habent had the money to replace it. Ive been looking into meitai's and would love to try one as at three months old weighing seven kilo I think my back could use the help and support of a softer carrier. Thanks for the giveaway opportunity :)

    ReplyDelete
  65. I loved the Moby for newborn , but now I'm kinda digging the mei tei!

    ReplyDelete
  66. I really like the mei tia!! I have always adored baby carrying and those that do. I did carry my daughter for awhile but she outgrew the carrier/sling and I didn't buy a bigger one for lack of funds. This me around my babe is fifteen months I have attempted to home make a carrier with little success :( but I would love to have a comfortable carrier to tote him he loves being held but my arms gets so tired and switching from hip to hip.

    ReplyDelete

Would really want to have a taste of imported baby carrier like that of ByKay mei tei, it looks really comfy and with our weather here perfect that its summer-friendly. Hope I would win one.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Love my Diva Milano wrap. It's thin, airy and surprisingly strong.
Since a few week i also started using a ringsling an though it wasn't love at first sight, it's starting too bloom.

    ReplyDelete
  93. I mainly use a ssc and ringsling but think a MT is probably the most comfortable. Just need to get the hang of using one :)

    ReplyDelete
  94. LOVE Mei Tai's great for my slimmer frame, and easy for dad to use too - his fav carrier by far.

  105. I love my Vatanai woven wrap for wearing my 7mo around the house for naps and just general closeness. I like my ergo and the didymos wrap. So I think I'd love a Mei Tei since it's a mix between the two I love. Thanks for the chance to win this!!

    ReplyDelete
  113. I currently don't own any carriers. So my favorite would have to be any that would keep my baby happy and us both cool....

    ReplyDelete
  114. thus far for simplicity and versatility my favorite is my mei tai-however i haven't dipped my toe into wraps.............yet ;)

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  116. I love my woven wraps and used to have a regular mei tai. I can't wait to try one with wrap straps!

    ReplyDelete
  117. I love all of my carriers. My wovens are great for cool weather when we go on walks or I'll be wearing for a while. Love my tula for grocery shopping or long trips when I need to get her up and down fast. But right now my Pavo Etini RS is my go to. It's my first pavo and I'm obsessed. Also I love the ease of a ring sling. I will soon be in the market for my first WCMT. I don't have any MT experience but am soooo intrigued. So winning this would satisfy my curiosity. :)

    ReplyDelete
  118. Right now my SSC action baby carrier is just because it is easiest. Would love to try a woven wrap or ring sling, but can't afford anymore carriers.

    ReplyDelete
  119. I absolutely love my toddler tula for my 2 year old and my 2 month old only loves the wrap so far, i have a babyhawk meitai that she likes too but it doesnt look nearly as comfortable as that!

  125. so I'm new to the world of baby wearing, and I have to say that I really enjoy it. Considering that I've had a reconstruction on my spinal cord it's very hard for me to find a comfortable baby carrier. I have ring slings, wraps, Moby wraps, Ergo, and I keep using the Ergo because it's fast & somewhat comfortable. I've joined a baby wearing group & I'm so excited! They even have a library of great carriers so I know I'll find something. I'd love to try a Mei Tai like this one! It looks so easy & comfortable for you & baby.

    ReplyDelete
  126. Whit baby number 2 on the way this would be an awesome thing to win :) I would use it to have my hands free and my baby close to me

    ReplyDelete
  127. I first wore an elastic wrap but that did not feel comfortable for me. Right know i use an woven Amazonas wrap and the classic Ergobaby with my 6 month old babyboy an we both love both. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  128. My go to is my maya tie - mei tai with wrap straps in a pretty blue green colourway. It's getting a bit diggy to carry my 3yo though!

    ReplyDelete
  129. These are such pretty carriers. I really like the MT for its ease of use and lower learning curve! And they're a fun option for tandem wearing. But I confess, I'm a wrapper. My go to is my size 2 because I hate having too much fabric and since I'm small it makes a great all-around shorty.

    ReplyDelete
  130. I love my.Ergo but I've been wanting to try a mei tai for a long time.

    ReplyDelete
  131. I love mei tais. They are my favorite then ring slings.

    ReplyDelete
  133. This looks so lovely and comfortable. So far I've only tried a wrap, so that would be my favorite but I've been really wanting a mei tai with wrap straps. I wear my daughter at least 3 hours a day if not more. She has hip dysplasia and has to wear a brace 18/24hrs and she's often pretty angry about it, so babywearing has been such a life saver for us. <3

    ReplyDelete
  134. I'm not a very experienced carrier, but i own something similar to the moby wrap and my husband has a baby ergo. It's hard to find things to fit me and I am still learned the different techniques of wrapping.

    ReplyDelete
  135. I'm mostly into SSCs these days as my toddler isn't into being wrapped, but I've also never tried a MT so that may be my fave if I win one :)

    ReplyDelete
  136. I only have a Moby wrap. I adore it but I want to branch out and try new carriers. I would love to win this!

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  139. With baby getting too big for the ergo I would love to win this! I don't have a favorite, though, all my carriers have their own use.

I have an almost 7 year old, a 5 year old, a 3.5 year old and a 20 month old, and I like wearing anyone who needs to be worn. :)

    ReplyDelete
  146. My favourite wrap is a woven Ellevill, but unfortunately its too warm for the summer, so we use a didymos ringsling for now. :)

  147. I love my rs but find he's getting too heavy for me in it now. Enjoying the abc buckle I've borrowed from green bean sling library :)

  148. My favourite with DS1 was mei tais - so comfortable & versatile. http://mummyversion0point1.wordpress.com/2012/09/07/mei-tai-the-babywearing-bomb/. Just had DS2 & some of my MTs are too big to use with him but the Freehand is perfect.

  150. I used to be a ring sling/moby person but my son is getting 5 big for them. Tried my friend mei tai and looooved it!

  151. I am a woven wrap person, however, I cannot afford a good one so I have had to DIY all of the ones I have. I would love to try a MT if I can ever afford one.

  152. Ring Slings were my favorite for the newborn to about 6 months stage. But now I'm loving my Mei Tai and thinking I need a few more to leave in the car/truck). :-)

  153. I've actually never tried a Mei Tai and I'm not sure I can pick one wrap type. I love love love woven wraps. Beautiful jacquard patterns....LOVE! I enjoy our structured carrier for quick trips in and out of the supermarket, and our ring sling for a quick up that is also really pretty. I love them all!! :)

  154. have tried a ring, pouch and Ergo. all are ok, but don't love any of them yet. would love to try a woven

  155. I am new with all this babywearing things because i am a new mom, i have a rebozo wrap and my baby loves it. I would like to try this denim one, looks awesome and very comfy.

  156. I started with a strechty wrap but quickly went to woven wraps. Now I have a ringsling that I LOVE for short distances. For longer distances I still prefer either my ellevil or calin blue, depending on the weather.

But.. I have been looking for a mei tai, because wrapping "in the wild" isn't my strong suit yet. And I think with a mei-tai that would be easier.

  157. I use a SSC called Luna and a ring sling, and love them both. Dad uses the SSC also, it's their moment every evening when they go for a walk.

  159. I love wraps, but I reach more my ring sling most often :)

  160. LOVE our mei tai but for shorter amounts of time we use our RS with our toddler. We love using our long wrap if our son is going to be in the wrap for a long time without taking him out. We just ordered a size 4 wrap that we hope to use for hip carries and back carries Our Ergo hasn't gotten much love lately...

  161. I only have one carrier, a Hug A Bub. I absolutely adore it, but buying Mei Tai was a close second on my list. This one you have reviewed looks fantastic! If i had more money i could so easily fall down the rabbit hole of too many wraps! lol

  162. I loved my MT, but sold it, so now I'm mostly a wrap and ring sling girl. My ring sling was my first love though, so it will always be my favorite.

  163. I am new to baby wearing, so I have only tried a sling and my SSC. My lo is only 2 weeks so I do not have much experience with either! But so far, the SSC I have (Lilebaby complete) is really comfy! I am anxious to get my hands on a ring sling and a woven wrap as well though!

  164. My fav carrier right now is totally a mei tai, with wovens coming a very close second. This carrier looks so comfy! I love a good pair of jeans to begin with.

  165. What a wonderful review. I'm a big fan of denim and love the fact this one is a linen cotton blend!
My favorite carrier right now would have to be a mei tai. I am very interested in trying out the wrap conversions because they look so comfy.

  166. I'm really not sure what my favorite carrier is at this point. I haven't tried ANY. Baby comes in early July, so I'd like a variety to find something I like and have as my "go-to" I do like the way the Mei Tei looks, I also like the look of the ring sling, but I know DH would never try something like that, he would prefer an actual carrier. Haven't sorted out which kind we will get yet though. :D

  168. I love my wrap, for sure, but I could fall in love with a carrier too :) but at the moment, my one and only wrap is a didymos hoot :)

  169. I love my Storch wrap, but with my wiggly toddler and being preggers, my current fave is my mei tai :-)

  174. Supportivness is our most important quality in wovens, but we have to find some ultra-strong MT ;)
